"Participating in sport can improve the quality of life of individuals and communities, promote social inclusion, improve health, counter anti-social behaviour, raise individual self-esteem and confidence, and widen horizons." (sportscotland, 2003, p7)
Sport not only keeps people healthy and fit but also provides important opportunities for people to become active and productive members of their local community. New and lifelong friendships are often formed by members of local sports clubs and teams, encouraging a feeling of togetherness and belonging which is an important element in building a safer and more cohesive society.
The positive role and influence of local voluntary sports clubs cannot be underestimated. Sport England estimates the value that volunteers make to sport and their local community at approximately £14 billion per annum.
Leeds Rugby Foundation is committed to working with clubs, teams and volunteers at grass roots level, with the aim of encouraging more people of all ages and levels of ability to take part and enjoy sport as either a player, volunteer or administrator.
