Leeds Rhinos Foundation has received a £33,000 donation from IGEN Trust to support the charity's Inspiring Champions project.
Inspiring Champions is a six-week early intervention course targeted at Year 5 pupils who attend school in areas of Leeds where numbers of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) are significantly above average.

Delivered by Leeds Rhinos Foundation Staff, sessions are tailored to the particular needs of each participating school and comprise of positive activities focusing on a number of key themes including teamwork, resilience, problem solving, ambition and living a healthy lifestyle. Each theme is brought to life through the inspirational stories of local 'Inspiring Champions,' including Lizzie Jones, Jane Tomlinson and Leeds Rhinos' players Ashton Goulding and Stevie Ward.

The project, which is funded by IGEN Trust, also aims to use the Leeds Rhinos brand and its assets, such as players and facilities, to motivate the children and reduce the risk of them becoming NEET in later life.

Frank Griffiths, chair of IGEN trust, said: "We are proud to support Leeds Rhinos Foundation in tackling the crisis faced by many families in combatting educational and social exclusion in today's brutally competitive world.

"Our partnership with the Rhinos Foundation is consistent with the values and ambition of IGEN to reach out to those facing the threat of exclusion in society and long may our partnership continue"

Since its inception in January 2015, around 900 children from 18 different Leeds primary schools have benefitted from taking part in the Inspiring Champions programme.

Dan Busfield, head of partnerships and development for Leeds Rhinos Foundation, added: "We are delighted to extend our partnership with IGEN Trust. Their continued support means that we can deliver more positive outcomes for young people in Leeds through the Inspiring Champions programme."
