Changing Lives Through Sport

Asda Foundation Off the Bench programme

No ALT tag specifiedThe Asda Foundation is a charitable corporate foundation making independent grants throughout the UK, with the aim of transforming communities and improving lives for people and communities in the UK both now and in the future. It funds charitable projects and activities that have the ideas and ability to achieve change for the better.

Asda recently supported the work of the Leeds Rhinos' Official charity with a donation to fund a series of personal development programmes and educational projects to be run by the Leeds Rhinos Foundation staff in the TryZone education centre at Headingley Carnegie Stadium over the next three years.

The programme has been developed supported by Asda Foundation for young people 16+ who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) and designed to bridge the gap between personal life skills and gaining employment. Young people need a much more engaging and rounded programme which looks at developing them as people in order for them to grasp opportunities which may come their way. Often young people may be qualified to fulfil certain roles but their personal and social skills are the major barrier to employment.

The project is down into six week blocks of intervention which will mean there are opportunities for young people to be engaged at many levels and also sustain their involvement and development, whilst improving young people's physical and mental well-being. The strands will consist of:

This will focus on areas such as team work, problem solving, overcoming barriers, relationships, communication, media, alongside a variety of physical activities both indoor and outdoor to promote team-work and leadership skills. The project will develop young people's life skills, whilst increasing motivation, resilience, building confidence and self-esteem.

This will focus on how to lead rugby league coaching sessions and by the end of the course young people will be able to plan, organise and deliver a coaching session/festival, referee a modified game in a safe environment and help manage a tag rugby festival. This award enables the students to become leaders with a view to further opportunities of volunteering in the sport of Rugby League.

The aim will be to empower young adults to improve health throughout life. This aspect of the programme will take a holistic approach to promote healthy choices nutritional education and physical activity.

This will aim to build confidence and self-esteem, while equipping young people with some new and up to date skills. Including interview techniques, C.V writing, employability skills to assist them in pursuing employment, education or training in the future. There will be links with Asda with an opportunity to do interview practice and experience different roles within Asda.
